Activists Storm Jail, Free Separatists in Ukraine

World Today

Sixty seven activists who were detained by police for their involvement in Odessa’s deadly clashes earlier this week, were released on Sunday after pro-Russia crowds stormed the city’s police station.

Activists marched towards the local police station following a pro-Russia rally which took place in the square next to the Trade Union building where the deadly clashes occurred. More than 40 people died in this violence from gunshot wounds or while hiding in the Trade Union building, which was set on fire.

“They call us separatists and pro-Russia, but we’re just ordinary Russian Odessa citizens, we’ve actually always been more closer to Russia”, said Nataliia, one of the activists who protested in front of the police station.

Ukraine’s prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk on Sunday visited Odessa seeking to defuse mounting tensions and calling the deaths a “tragedy for all Ukraine.” He said police were being investigated for their failure to maintain order and hinted strongly that he sees Moscow’s hand in the unrest.
