The state of Oregon approved the construction of a coal exporting hub.It will boost coal exports to Asia and help the area’s economy. But some say the deal could be disastrous for the environment.

Plans for a first-ever coal-exporting facility in the U.S. Pacific Northwest got a big boost last month-when the state of Oregon approved three key permits for the project. Ambre Energy envisions its Morrow Pacific Project will export up to 9 million tons of coal to Asia every year.
But the coal would first need to travel by barge along the Columbia River.

And that’s where another hurdle remains. The project needs another permit showing it will not cause environmental damage to this major waterway. A final decision should come sometime this spring. CCTV’s Chris Casquejo has more.
