Is It Time to Bring an End to the U.S. Embargo of Cuba?

The Heat

It’s been in place for more than 50 years, has seen eleven U.S. presidents come and go, has divided two countries, and cost billions of dollars in trade. So, is it time to bring the U.S. embargo of Cuba to an end?

Just 145 kilometers separate Cuba from the United States but, when it comes to politics, they are worlds apart. For more than fifty years, the U.S. has imposed an embargo on the island nation, with major trade and travel implications involved. Critics say the controversial policy is a relic of the Cold War and that it is time to scrap it. CCTV’s Michael Voss reports from Cuba.

Ninoska Perez Castellon, long-time opponent of the Cuban government and proponent of the embargo; and Hugo Cancio, who is opposed to the embargo, join CCTV’s Anand Naidoo to discuss the future of the trade embargo.

Dr. Carlos Alzugaray Treto, a former Cuban diplomat and educator joins CCTV’s Anand Naidoo from Cuba for another perspective on the embargo.

To wrap up the discussion on the U.S. trade embargo, CCTV’s Anand Naidoo is joined by Sujatha Fernandes, Associate Professor of Sociology at Queens University; and Jaime Suchlicki, Director of Cuban American studies at the University of Miami.
