China Helps Bring Clean Water to Angola

In Angola, only a few residents in the capital have access to tap water. But, with the help of China's Power Construction Corporation (PCCC), the government's trying to change that. CCTV’s Clementine Logan has more.

Joint project with Power Construction Corporation China (PCCC) is helping distribute tap water to thousands of homes.

About 3 million people live in Angola’s bustling capital, Luanda. Only a small number of them had tap water in their houses.

But the country’s state-run water company teamed up with the Power Construction Corporation of China to change that.

The PCCC has launched a water project in the area of Mulenvos. It includes a distribution center and supply network, covering 24 square kilometers, which should bring clean tap water to 180-thousand residents.

Before Daniel and his family got clean tap water in their house two years ago, it used to be a big expense. He says: “Before, we had to buy water from the truck. Now, as you can see, we all have water in our homes. It’s important, water is life. I have to thank the government and the men doing this job. And I don’t think we should stop here- there are many more people still suffering who need water.”

The PCCC now plans to take its water supply projects further afield.

Some 40 thousand people in the city of Caxito, just 80km northeast of Luanda, are in serious need of clean affordable water. Currently, they rely on water from the river Dange.

A sewage treatment plant will be the first phase of the project that will see clean water distributed to 63 thousand people in Caxito and 8 neighboring towns.
