Colombia Farmers Protest Against Government

In Colombia, striking farmers have filled the streets of Bogota in protest. The farmers say the government has still not kept promises made to them last year, when it signed the National Agrarian Pact.

Dozens of university students clashed with riot police to show support for the ongoing farmers’ strike. The masked demonstrators hurled smoke bombs and rocks at security forces, who responded with multiple rounds of tear gas. The protesters also caused damage to a nearby bus station. According to the police, the clashes left two police officers injured.A number of students were detained by authorities but no official arrest figures have been released.

Talks between farmers and ministers broke down over the issue of small debt refinancing. CCTV’s Michelle Begue reports from Bogota with more.
