Six Ukrainian Soldiers Killed in Ambush

Ukranian officials say at least six Ukranian soldiers were killed Tuesday when anti-government militias ambushed their armored column. The attack happened in the Sloviansk region of Donetsk-one of two in eastern Ukraine that declared independence on Monday.

“Our soldiers were attacked in an ambush. Terrorists attacked our land troops with grenades. The attackers were more than 30 people and set an ambush near the river,” the ministry said.

“After a long shootout, six soldiers of The Ukrainian Armed Services were killed,” the statement said. CCTV’s Kate Parkinson reports from Sloviansk.

Russia is not happy with the European Union’s response to the weekend referendum vote.The Russian government did not even say that it recognized the results of the voting, which the authorities in Kiev and their Western supporters all declared illegal from the start.

A preliminary count from eastern Ukraine showed 89 percent of voters in the Donetsk region and 97.5 percent in neighboring Luhansk voted for greater autonomy.

Meanwhile, EU just signed a $1.4 billion aid package for Ukraine. Russia has responded with threats to shut off natural gas supplies to Ukraine. CCTV’s Tom Barton has more from Moscow.
