Acai: A Miracle Berry

Americas Now

If you walk in to any local health food store, you’re almost guaranteed to see this superfood stocked on the shelves.  For more than a decade, the Açaí berry is gaining popularity around the world. Resting high in the treetops of the Amazon, it has filled the diets of tribes who believed in the berry’s ability to cure ailments and boost immunity.

The small berry is marketed as a weight-loss sensation and an anti-aging miracle worker. But to locals who harvest and produce it, it’s just another meal.  In the Brazilian state of Para, accounting for more than 90% of the country’s acai production, exportation increased from 280 metric tons in 2000, to 9,800 metric tons in 2009. Americas Now takes a look into the Amazon to explore the small, yet powerful berry.
