Polls Show Colombian President Losing Ground

World Today

One of the final opinion polls in Colombia’s presidential election finds the country’s leader losing his lead. The support is surging for a candidate who opposes peace talks with the FARC rebels.

Current President Juan Manuel Santos has worked on negotiations with the group to end Colombia’s longest-running guerrilla war. If he loses, it could end the talks. Meanwhile, opposition presidential candidate Oscar Ivan Zuluaga said on Saturday that if he comes to power, he will give FARC rebels eight days to declare if they want negotiated peace.

Zuluaga spoke at a campaign rally in the municipality of Villeta in the Cundinamarca department, located about 65 kilometres northeast of Bogota. CCTV’s Michelle Begue has the story from Bogota.
