With income inequality in the U.S. widening, the lack of affordable housing is getting worse, particularly in economically vibrant cities like San Francisco and New York. In response to this, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio recently unveiled a plan to build, or preserve, more than 200-thousand low and middle-income units during the next ten years.

Home prices nationwide in the U.S. were up as much as 13 percent in the past year, which helped lift four million homeowners from being underwater. However, this also priced many homeowners out of the market.
