Al-Sisi claims victory in Egypt’s presidential election

World Today

Early results indicate Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Egypt’s former military chief, has won an overwhelming victory in the country’s presidential election. State media reported that he won by a landslide, with more than 92 per cent of the votes.

Retired Field Marshal el-Sissi won more than 92 percent of the vote, compared with 2.9 percent percent for his sole opponent and four percent of invalid votes, according to a tally released by his campaign. His victory was never in doubt, but the career infantry officer had pushed for an overwhelming turnout as well to bestow legitimacy on his ouster last July of Egypt’s first freely-elected president, the Islamist Mohammed Morsi.

CCTV’s Yaseer Hakim spent some time with counting officials and voters to hear what they had to say.
