Lakhdar Brahimi Resigns From Frustration

World Today

Lakhdar Brahimi always said that if elections in Syria went ahead he saw no point in him staying.

On June 3rd, Syrians will vote for the next president and President Bashar al-Assad is expected to win his third term in office.

With that looming, Brahimi is leaving.  The news of his departure was announced two weeks ago by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who showed a rare flash of frustration about the UN’s inability to make progress on Syria.

Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General said, “Because of the division, because of the divided world here and there, within the United Nations and in the region, we have not been able to make any progress in the course of this three years.”

Lakhdar Brahimi was himself apologetic, lamenting the lack of progress.

Brahimi may not have stopped the conflict in Syria, but he did manage to facilitate two rounds of peace talks in Geneva between the Syria government and the opposition that in itself was no small feat.

CCTV’s Nick Harper reports.
