Over 200 freed after case against Morsi supporters dismissed

World Today

An Egyptian court has dismissed charges against 228 alleged supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi due to a lack of evidence.

Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat on Saturday ordered freedom for the accused, who had been detained on charges of storming and torching the prosecutors’ office and the office of a local police traffic unit in mid-August in Minya, a city south of Cairo on the Nile River’s western bank.

The attacks followed the violent dispersal of two pro-Morsi protest camps in Cairo, which left hundreds of people dead, according to local and international rights groups.

The 228 Egyptians spent 10 months in jail, but no court case was filed against them. CCTV’S Adel EL Mahrouky reports from Cairo.
