Security remains one of the biggest concerns in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the World Cup, which opens soon this week.
Despite an ambitious police program launched in 2008 to retake the city’s favelas, or shantytowns, from the control of drug gangs, violence remains the order of the day in many. At the Mare complex, a group of favelas located near Rio’s international airport, Brazil’s armed forces are now in charge. CCTV’s Lucrecia Franco has more.
