Army in Iraq is losing control to ISIS forces

The Sunni militant group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria or ISIS has made serious gains from northern Iraq all the way towards Baghdad. But we are seeing a wave of volunteers now joining the Iraqi military to try and stop them.

At recruitment centers in Baghdad and in southern Iraq, men are signing up to take up arms alonside the Iraqi military.

The mobilization which was urged by the nation’s top Shiite cleric and answered by Shiite men could actually intensify the sectarian nature of the conflict.

Sunni resentment towards the Shia government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has already played into the violence there.

On Saturday, a spokesman for the Iraqi military credited the incoming volunteer soldiers for helping the military regain the upper hand.
