More green options and better energy efficiency in China

World Today

China has placed increasing importance on developing alternative energy as the country is pursuing green economy.

Both the government and citizens are calling for better energy efficiency and more investment in renewable energy to better husband fuel expenses and minimize air borne pollutants and carbon emissions. Behind the hustle and bustle in Beijing, the burning of petroleum and coal keeps the city and economy running.

One recent study shows that coal-burning and motor vehicle emissions make up 60 to 70 percent of tiny PM2.5 particles-pollutants that blur visibility and pose a health concern when levels in the air hit high.

The country is now calling for more efforts to develop alternative energy to reduce air pollution and resource consumption.

Clean energy is expected to account for over a half of China’s energy consumption by 2050. Which explains why businesspeople have been increasingly keen to park their money in alternative energy.

Chinese authorities have set alternative energy as a strategic priority. Incentives include a system of subsidies to push sectors such as wind technology.

Currently the country has the world’s largest wind power installation capacity and intends to double the number of wind turbines over the next six years.

Solar power is also another area of importance for green energy. The country’s solar power capacity may surge to 10 million kilowatts by 2020. But many say China’s quest towards more alternative energy channels face road bumps ahead. CCTV’s Su Yuting reports.
