They say nothing in life is free. But if Sal Khan has anything to say about it, that age-old adage is, well, bogus.

Khan spoke with Full Frame’s Mike Walter about his mission to “accelerate learning for students of all ages” and the success of Khan Academy as the “go-to” educational resource for anyone, anywhere.

Kahn Academy offers online education for free

They say nothing in life is free. But if Sal Khan has anything to say about it, that age-old adage is, well, bogus.

With his creation of the not-for-profit Khan Academy, in 2006, Sal Khan has made academic resources accessible to millions of students worldwide – all for free. The Khan Academy’s mission is to provide “a free world-class education for anyone anywhere”; and the initiative is being embraced by students of all ages across the globe.

Khan’s model stemmed from the remote math tutoring that he provided to his cousins through simple YouTube videos. Today, he oversees the production of thousands of videos and other on-line learning tools on hundreds of topics that are being accessed not only by students, but also teachers, businesses, and adults returning to the classroom after 20 years. And with the help of volunteer translators from around the world, the lessons are now available in several languages, including Spanish, Portuguese and Mandarin.

“If I could look back on my life…at least I took the shot at creating this not for profit that could help reach millions of people, help empower millions of people… that seemed like a pretty exciting thing,” Khan said.
