At least 52 workers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are taking antibiotics to protect themselves against the potentially deadly bacteria anthrax. CCTV’s Jessica Stone reports.

As many as 86 employees were potentially exposed after a lab safety problem earlier this week.

Scientists had been preparing an especially dangerous strain of the bacteria for use at the two lower-security CDC labs. But the lab at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta failed to completely inactivate anthrax samples sent to less secure labs for further research.

The breach was discovered last week, but it was not revealed until Thursday.

The CDC says it happened in three laboratories where lab workers weren’t required to wear respirators which would have protected them from the spores.

More people are expected to come forward as news gets out, but experts say the public should not be concerned about an outbreak spreading beyond the employees who were initially infected.
