Venezuela has seen its first demonstrations since last month. Martin Markovits reports from the capital Caracas with more.
Thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Caracas and other parts of Venezuela. It was to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Carabobo, which was essential to helping spark Venezuela’s independence over 200 years ago. They are also, however, asking for new independence from what they deem the failed policies of President Nicolás Maduro.
Protests originated about 5 months ago with widespread anger over huge inflation rates, shortage, and high crime levels. Also over the last few months, over 40 people have died and dozens have been arrested.
The day’s demonstrators were asking for the release of those prisoners, but it does not seem that will happen anytime soon. President Nicolás Maduro says these demonstrations are backed by the United States and right-wing forces. He has refused to grant even amnesty to these detainees.
Protesters erected barricades and there were reports of some minor clashes between students and the National Guard.
There is a growing fear that the intensity of the protests has died down. That is one of the main reasons student leaders have called for demonstrations. There has not been a major demonstration in over a month.
