Walmart has been in Brazil for almost two decades with more than 550 stores in nearly 200 cities. But the retailer hasn’t enjoyed the same success it has seen in the U.S.

The company is battling competition from other chains that have embraced Brazilians’ penchant for shopping around for the best deals. Adding to its challenges, Walmart lacks the scale to squeeze local suppliers on price as it has done so effectively at home.
