Cross-strait relations may take on a new form, as the Chinese mainland has sent its Taiwan affairs chief to Taiwan. CCTV’s Jie Bai reports on the first visit of its kind.

“My flight from Beijing to Taipei took me less than three hours. But it took us 65 years to make that flight possible,” Zhang said during his meeting with the head of Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council Wang Yu-chi. As the first Taiwan affairs chief from the Chinese mainland to visit Taiwan in 65 years, Zhang Zhijun will devote three out of the four days to speak with the people of Taiwan. His visit comes months after student protests called for a halt to the ratification of a two-way service trade liberalization pact between the two nations.

Both Zhang and Wang agree that both sides need to work together to address the differences and challenges in cross-strait relations.
