Uruguay striker Luis Suarez suspended for biting

FIFA announced the longest ban in World Cup history on Thursday. Football’s governing body banned Uruguay striker Luis Suarez for nine games. CCTV’s Joel Richards reports from Rio de Janeiro.
FIFA said it would not tolerate such behavior, after video evidence showed Suarez bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during their Group D match.

After the speculation, came the confirmation. The Uruguay striker’s biting of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini had the whole world talking.

Though Suarez was already involved in two previous biting incidents in his career, the Uruguay Federation will appeal this longest ban in World Cup history. Many expected harsh punishment. Luis Suarez has now received a total ban of 26 games for three separate biting incidents.

Luis Suarez is not only the poster boy for Uruguay, but also for many important sponsors who have made statements regarding this nine-match ban. Adidas said the company does not condone Luis Suarez’s recent behavior and would be reminding the striker of the high standards expected of him.

This ban leaves Uruguay without its star player at the World Cup. It also leaves the Liverpool football club without its star asset for the new season and it leaves Suarez’s own star very much on a falling trajectory.
