Isabel Allende: Envisioning a female empowered worldAuthor and activist Isabel Allende

For many, Isabel Allende remains one of the most influential writers of our time. She is also an outspoken women’s rights activist and humanitarian. CCTV’s Mike Kirsch spent time with Isabel Allende to learn about her personal and professional drives.

As Allende’s mesmerizing masterpiece, The House of Spirits, approaches its 30th anniversary, the 71-year old is looked at as “Latin America’s greatest living writer.” However, she is also notable for her work in female activism.

In 1995, she created the Isabel Allende Foundation to support the empowerment of women and girls worldwide. She says the basis of her foundation is guided by a vision of a world in which women have achieved social and economic justice. This vision includes the empowerment of women and girls, and protecting women and children.

However, she says she can only do so much to help spread the word, “I have found that it is more efficient to concentrate on specific issues in limited areas.” Therefore, she says she supports select nonprofits whose mission coincides with hers.

Her mission is providing women and girls with reproductive rights, in addition to improving their lives with better self-determination, healthcare, and education as well as protection from violence, exploitation.
