Annual report from the United Nations released

The year 2013, saw an increase in the number of children killed or mutilated in conflicts around the world, including in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, while the recruitment of children was particularly alarming in the Central African Republic and Nigera. CCTV’s Liling Tan reports.

Speaking to reporters at the United Nations, the UN Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflict provided an overview of the situation, based on the latest annual report.

Notably, the advance of the militant group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, known as ISIL, has made the situation worse for children.

Syria also continues to be an extremely dangerous place for children. In a civil war entering its fourth year, the situation shows little sign of improvement. The advance of ISIL into Syrian territory has made conditions worse for children.

In Nigeria, the extremist group Boko Haram has been added to the Secretary General’s list for the first time.
