As cease-fire ends, fighting resumes in Ukraine

Heavy fighting has erupted in eastern Ukraine after the ten-day cease-fire was called off. Ukraine’s President says he is resuming an offensive to protect his country’s territorial integrity and safeguard the lives of civilians.

Ukrainian forces and pro-Russia separatists fought with heavy weapon with insurgents capturing Interior Ministry headquarters in Donetsk, the largest city in eastern Ukraine.

Streets were deserted throughout the city centre and civilians could be seen escaping through the window of a nearby hospital, as pro-Russian fighters attacked the Interior Ministry compound.

After five hours of gun battles, the insurgents took control of the ministry, a complex of buildings including the Donetsk regional police force’s headquarters, leaving the dead body of a plainclothes police officer outside.

At least three pro-Russian fighters were injured in the battles, according to insurgent sources. CCTV’S Stephanie Freid reports from Kiev with the latest.
