Venezuela doctors demand gov’t security after shooting in hospitals

World Today

In Venezuela, doctors are demanding better protection, after armed men stormed an operating room and shot a patient to death. At the time of the violence, surgeons were working on the patient’s gunshot wound. Hospital personnel closed the emergency room for 72 hours as a protest.

Venezuela suffered more than 11,000 homicides last year, according to the government, while some NGOs say the true figure was closer to 25,000.

To try to reduce those figures, President Nicolas Maduro last year activated a plan to station soldiers in the streets to support the police in their work. CCTV’s Martin Markovits reports from Caracas with details.
