Uganda: Clashes with military and militia kill dozens

In Uganada, the exchange of gun fire left the Resident District Commissioner Pius Mujuzi shot and injured in the leg.

Police say it was a stray bullet from friendly fire. The death toll is now over 60, with most of the deceased being assailants who were shot after they tried to attack a local police station and a military barracks. Police insist the attacks are linked to tribal misunderstandings between the ethnic bakonzo and bamba tribes, and community leaders agree.

However, local leaders say the attacks are beyond cultural institutions and that government must pay close attention to the issue. Over 80 people, most of them youths, have been arrested and taken in for questioning. CCTV’s Michael Baleke reports from Western Uganda.
