RIMPAC 2014: Chinese hospital ship houses 100 doctors and nurses

At the “Rim of the Pacific” naval exercises in Hawaii, sophisticated warships get a lot of attention. This time, however, a different kind of ship is making waves. CCTV’s Nathan King reports from inside China’s advanced hospital ship: the “Peace Ark.”

At the "Rim of the Pacific" naval exercises in Hawaii, sophisticated warships get a lot of attention. This time, however, a different kind of ship is making waves. CCTV's Nathan King reports from inside China's advanced hospital ship: the "Peace Ark."

Below the deck of the ship is a modern floating hospital, with more than 100 doctors and nurses capable of treating more than 100 common diseases.

There are also eight operating theaters and state of the art communications. On deck , the ship has the ability to rescue those stranded at sea using rescue pods.

The Peace Ark in the coming days will be at the heart of a humanitarian assistance exercise involving many other navies. This will involve testing and training for the inevitable disasters that will happen in real life across the Pacific.

Dean Cheng joined us for more perspective on the significance of these exercises.

He specializes in China’s military and foreign policy, especially its relationship with the rest of Asia and with the United States.

He’s a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a research and educational institution here in Washington.
