As more child migrants from Central America cross the border from Mexico to the United States, U.S. President Barack Obama requested emergency funding on Tuesday. It’ll help fund the legal process that will send back home the kids who are already here. Steve Handlesman reports from Capitol Hill.

President Obama is asking Congress for $3.7 billion in emergency funding. $1.6 billion to beef up the border with more agents, $1.8 billion to take better care of the 50+ thousand kids being detained, and $300 million for a campaign to convince central American parents not to send their kids to the U.S.

Josh Earnest, White House Spokesman: “to more efficiently remove those individuals that do not have a legal basis for remaining in this country”

While some Democrats oppose a rush to deport children. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, Democrat from Texas: “And we’re not asking that they all get amnesty, but we do need a little humanity here. There’s a reason we just don’t throw them back into the river or drive them back into the desert”

The White House blames the backlog on a Bush-era law protecting Central American kids. Republican Rep. Tom Cole from Oklahoma says: “y’know, this is the oldest trick in the Obama book. Blame George Bush. It happened in 2008 really”.

Some are saying that in 2005 when President Bush famously flew over New Orleans after Hurricane Katrine instead of immediately visiting damaged his image, and now in 2014 this may be President Obamas “hurricane”.

Republican Rep. Blake Farenthold from Texas says to CCTV: “This is really President Obama’s Katrina, his failure to go down there in a timely manner”

It is said that President Obama travels to Texas on July, 9, 2014 for fundraising. He plans to meet with Republican Governor Rick Perry on this border crisis, but he has no plans to visit the border anytime soon.
Republicans agree this is an urgent humanitarian crisis and they plan to quickly consider the President’s call for emergency spending to slow the flood of children.
