Hundreds of fans watched the match at a fan zone in downtown Belo Horizonte and some could not watch while others were crying as Germany scored five goals in the first 29 astonishing minutes of the match.

For the Brazilians it was sad faces all round, some with tears in their eyes, and even a last-ditch goal by Oscar failed to lighten the mood.

The result sees the hosts’ dream of winning a sixth World Cup title on home soil flattened.

“For me this is embarrassing. Very embarrassing,” said Brazil fan Leandro Costa. “We Brazilians have been waiting for this since the mid 50’s. We wanted Brazil to win here and to throw a big party. And this is not what people expected. This is the opposite. This was embarrassing.”

“This is a disaster. A disaster,” added Brazil fan Nilson Caro. “This was unpredictable. A disaster. A disaster. I have no words to describe it.”

Germany will now take on either Argentina or the Netherlands in the final in Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium on July 13, while Brazil will play for third place the day before.
