Investigators search home of another suspected spy

World Today

Investigators in Germany are searching the home and office of a suspected U.S. spy in its military. This comes just days after the arrest of a member of its foreign intelligence agency who’s suspected of being a double agent.

These are the latest cases involving suspected espionage involving the two countries in the past week. CCTV’s Ira Spitzer reports from Berlin.

The new case comes just days after the German public was outraged by the arrest of a man who, federal prosecutors say, was selling state secrets to the U.S.

The latest case involves an employee of the German Defense Ministry. The German newspaper die Welt is reporting that he is a Bundeswehr soldier who was spying for Washington.

American Ambassador John Emerson was at the German foreign ministry again on Wednesday but offered no statement about the latest developments. Still reeling from the fallout last year over the revelations that the U-S had spied on German citizens and even went as far as tapping Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cell phone, German media and politicians are demanding an explanation.

Last week’s arrest involved a 31-year-old employee of Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, the BND, who admits to selling documents to an American contact for at least two years. There are reports that the Central Intelligence Agency, or CIA, may have been actively involved. German media is reporting, however, that the new allegations are potentially even more serious.
