Mexican government approves telecommunication reform

Global Business

Mexico’s congress has approved landmark reforms to their telecommunication industry. CCTV’s John Holman reports from Mexico City.

Companies such as Televisa, the largest Spanish language network in the world, and America Movil, which controls upwards of 70 percent of the telephone market, will have to make some changes as a result of these reforms.

In the governments’ effort to open up the telecommunication sector, the new reforms allow such companies to only own less than 50 percent of their respective markets.

Although the law seems to be creating a more free telecommunication environment, it also gives the government more control over the Internet and personal cell phone records.
