Earthquake rocks northern Japan, tsunami advisory issued

Japan’s northern coast was hit by a 6.8-magnitude earthquake early Saturday, near the nuclear power plant crippled in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The quake struck 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the surface off the coast of Fukushima, northeast of Tokyo, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency. A tsunami advisory was issued by the agency for the northern coast of Japan.

The Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant is being checked for damage from the quake, according to public broadcaster NHK. More than 100,000 people are still unable to go home due to radiation contamination from the 2011 disaster, which claimed about 19,000 lives. That earthquake registered at a 6.6. magnitude.
