Bolsa Familia was launched in 2002 as a program for the poorest in Brazil. Loosely interpreted as Family Scholarship, the UN program was designed to eliminate extreme poverty and bring millions of Brazilians into the middle class.

Famillies receive a monthly sum from the government if they can prove they’ve kept their children in school and sent them to clinics for regular check-ups. Ten years later, Bolsa Familia has been credited for cutting Brazil’s extreme poverty rate in half. With over 11 million families and 46 million people apart of this program,

Bolsa Familia has insprired more than 20 countries, including Mexico and Chile, to adopt similar programs. Elaine Reyes sits down with Brazilian Minister Tereza Campello to discuss the ground-breaking program she oversees.
