Netherlands' Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he spoke to Vladimir Putin and was assured of a complete and independent, international investigation. He also said they would "turn every stone" to investigate the tragedy. CCTV' s Richard Bestic reports from Amsterdam on the grim aftermath.

For many of the 17 million people of the Netherlands, the downing of MH17 is a national tragedy. Nearly two-thirds of the victims were Dutch.

“A lot of Dutch nationals have perished, and that is why it is important the Netherlands is part of the international investigation team,” said Ivo Opstelten, Dutch Justice Minister. “The investigation should start as soon as possible, on location and in concert with the Ukrainian authorities.”

Malaysia Airlines has been giving some details of the Boeing-777’s mechanical history, confirming the 17 year-old craft, seen before and during takeoff, was in good condition.

Prime Minister Rutte has ordered flags on government buildings across the country to fly at half-staff as he addressed a nation in shock. Heartfelt sentiment was shared at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, where people laid floral tributes.
