Kerry meets in Cairo to push for cease-fire in Gaza

Thirteen days after the launching of Israel’s Operation Protective Edge, the number of casualties in Gaza has reached over 500. The UN Refugee Agency reported that about 70,000 people have been displaced because of the conflict.

The UN Security Council met Sunday to express concern over the escalating violence at the Israel-Gaza frontier. The U.S. and Israel are pushing for a ceasefire deal backed by Egypt, but Hamas leaders are turning to Qatar and Turkey for an alternative proposal.

The U.S. is sending $47 million in humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip to help tens of thousands of Palestinians there. While Israel has not reached its stated goal of demilitarizing Hamas and no ceasefire deal has been reached, the conflict in that region is likely to escalate further.
