Cease-fire elusive in Gaza after six days of ground offensive

World Today

On the sixth day of Israel’s ground campaign in Gaza, diplomats were still struggling to implement a cease-fire. CCTV’s Stephanie Freid reports.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon met with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas in an effort to reach a cease-fire deal, and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Israel shortly after. The U.S. and Israel are in favor of a cease-fire plan brokered by Egypt, but Abbas is unlikely to agree with that plan.

This happens as Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad flew to Saudi Arabia to meet Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdel Aziz. They also were in the process of creating a cease-fire plan that Hamas is more likely to agree with.

More than 750 people have died in Gaza, and at least 200,000 have been displaced in the conflict so far.
