The United Nations Security Council is urged to take action in Iraq as the humanitarian crisis worsens. CCTV's Nick Harper reports.

The Islamic State has declared a caliphate following over a month of fighting. The top UN envoy in Iraq Nickolay Mladenov called on the Security Council to demand that the extremist group put an end to the violence by enforcing sanctions.

This comes a month after the Islamic State has taken control of about one third of the country.

Iraq’s UN Ambassador Mohamed Alhakim called for international and regional cooperation and assistance, saying it is essential to restore security and stability and fight terrorism.
