Gaza park struck after short cease-fire

After a 12-hour cease-fire, a park in the Gaza Strip was struck Monday, killing at least 10 Palestinians, including children, according to a Palestinian health official. Both Israel and Hamas are blamed for the strike, the Associated Press reported.

More than 1000 Palestinians and 46 Israelis have been killed so far in the three-week long conflict. More than 6,200 Palestinians have been injured, according to data from the Associated Press.

Israel’s military said it struck two rocket launchers and a rocket manufacturing facility in central and northern Gaza after a rocket hit southern Israel on Monday. The strikes disrupted a relative lull in the war-torn territory at the start of a major Muslim holiday and followed an almost 12-hour pause in the fighting.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon urged for an end to hostilities in Gaza after returning from a diplomatic trip to the region On Monday he reinforced the Security Council’s call for “an immediate and unconditional humanitarian cease-fire” in the Gaza war and demanded that Israel and Hamas end the violence “in the name of humanity.” U.S. President Barack Obama was joined by the UN Security Council in calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, after Israel and Hamas ignored calls for a truce despite mounting civilian casualties.
