Allegations of organ trafficking first surfaced in a 2008 book by a former United Nations War Crimes prosecutor. With demand far exceeding supply, there are inherent challenges in preventing a black market for organs. Today, some 80,000 people are on the United States' active waiting list for an organ transplant, and it is even worse in other parts of the world.
