DPRK says US bringing a ‘crisis of war’

World Today

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea asked for an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting to discuss the upcoming military exercises by the U.S. and South Korea.

The annual exercises are scheduled for later this month, but the DPRK has called them an aggressive provocation that could lead to war. Deputy representative for the DPRK Ri Tong Il accused the U.S. of bringing a “crisis of war” to the Korean peninsula.

The U.S. and U.N. have condemned the recent missile tests which were supervised by the DPRK’s leader Kim Jong-un. An emergency meeting at the DPRK’s request looks unlikely as both the U.S. and South Korea sit on the U.N. Security Council.

It seems the tense relations between the U.S. and South Korea and the DPRK have returned. At a rally in Pyongyang last week, the DPRK army threatened nuclear strikes on the White House.

Ri Tong Il refused to comment on the two American men detained in the DPRK. Both Matthew Miller and Jeffrey Fowle are charged with “anti-state” crimes. CCTV America’s Nick Harper reports.
