International experts arrive at MH17 crash site for second time

World Today

The personal belongings of those who were on Flight MH17 are scattered at the crash site in the Donetsk region, open for display and inspection by over 100 international experts. Friday marked the second time experts were able to arrive safely, and the teams were finally able to begin the recovery work at the wreckage site of the downed Malaysian aircraft. Some believe at least 80 bodies remain at the site.

Ukrainian President Poroshenko supported the investigation by issuing armed personnel to accompany the experts, but these measures have not been required so far. Considering the use of police forces and other technical details, the commission will evaluate the necessity of force and make the final decisions itself.

As for Friday, no such decision was made, and all the experts working at the site are doing so without weapons. On Thursday the Ukrainian military suspended all operations in the surrounding areas, but it was reported that the rebels chose otherwise. A spokesman for the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council said their men were attacked twice.

All day Thursday Ukrainian forces were trying to abide by a “day of silence,” but were shot at twice — first at 9 a.m. and again at 12 — by GRAD rocket launchers. Initial reports state 10 Ukrainian soldiers were killed on Thursday.
