EU leaders commemorate 100th anniversary of World War I

Two days of ceremonies began in Belgium to mark the start of one of the most destructive wars in history.

About 14 million people were killed in World War I. The commemoration of the brutal conflict by a host of European countries shows the progress that has been made in European relations over the past century.

Belgium, the country that suffered the largest amount of loss proportionally in the war, is now home to the European Union, committed to promoting peace and preserving good will and security among its member states.
