U.S.-Africa summit: A new era of cooperation

Insight

Leaders from nearly 50 African countries are in Washington, D.C. for the event that aims to strengthen security ties, as well as bolster the African economy with business-government relationships.

Participants in the three-day summit have said the U.S. should prepare for African leaders to strive for more than just an increase in aid.

African Union officials have also said they do not want to rely on the U.S. to solve security issues on their continent. The summit coincides with increasing security concerns in Libya.

Although the U.S. faces foreign investment competition from countries such as China and India, this summit could foster new relationships that may change the future of how the U.S. and African countries interact.
