Israel and Hamas agree to a 72-hour cease-fire

World Today

A temporary truce brokered by Egypt to end the conflict in Gaza looks to be holding tonight. The 72-hour ceasefire came into play earlier Tuesday, and now Egypt is trying to build on it with talks in Cairo.

Earlier this week Egyptian President Abdelfattah Elsisi said he will use the cease-fire talks to revive permanent peace talks. As for Palestinians, they know what it will take to support these efforts.

Officials in Gaza say the conflict has killed around 1,900 Palestinians and 67 Israelis.

The Palestinian leadership here in Cairo is confident that this cease-fire will succeed, and they are hopeful that it will be extended for seven more days.
