U.S. President Barack Obama authorizes targeted airstrikes in Iraq against Islamic militants, along with airdrops, on Thursday night. However, the president said American combat troops will not be sent back to Iraq.

UN council condemns minority attacks in Iraq

There are reports coming in of possible U.S. humanitarian aid for minority groups trying to evade the advance of Sunni militants of the Islamic State. The Kurds of the north and Iraq also report air strikes have begun. The Pentagon says warplanes are only providing escort protection for any possible aid drops. In addition, the U.N. Security Council meeting in emergency session has condemned the attacks by Islamic State militants.

The Yazidis, a small religious minority, are trapped on a mountain surrounded by Islamic militants. In addition, militants from the Islamic State say they’re in control of the largest dam in Iraq. The Associated Press’ Bureau Chief Vivian Salama reports from Baghdad.
