After a significant underground explosion caused a radiation leak in an nuclear waste facility, 22 workers suffered radiation exposure. The facility has been closed down, and is at risk of never reopening.

In February of this year, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico was forced to shut down. The U.S. Department of Energy is responsible for the site, and has been holding weekly public hearings since the accident happened. The U.S. is now left with the pressing problem of finding somewhere to put its growing supply of nuclear waste.
