The U.S. has launched airstrikes to stop the advance of Islamic State militants in northern Iraq. Britain has also said it will give emergency aid to Iraqi refugees.

The Islamic State fighters have cornered thousands of people from religious and ethnic minorities on Mount Sinjar.

The U.S. dropped humanitarian supplies to the victims on Friday, and officials have said that more air drops are possible. They have also said airstrikes may be use against Islamic State militants surrounding Mount Sinjar.

The Iraqi military also launched an airstrike on the militants in Sinjar, killing 45 of the fighters and wounding 60.
