Rebel and government forces battle over key locations

The Islamic States claims it has taken control of another Syrian army base. That would make it the second such gain in just over a week.

Neither the multi-barrel rockets nor the mortars hit any substantial government target, but three civilians were killed and 14 others wounded since the new barrage began.

From this military airbase near Damascus, fighter jets soar toward rebel targets near Damascus and central Syria. The base itself is a prime target of the rebels.

Crippling Syria’s air force would be a huge victory for the rebels and rob the government of one of its main tactical advantages. Over the course of the war, rebels have waged fierce battles to take control of three air bases, whether they will be able to eliminate the government’s air superiority remains to be seen
