Bullfighters on hunger strike in Bogota after sport banned

World Today

After the mayor of Bogota, Colombia essentially banned bullfighting in the city, a group of bullfighters has been on hunger strike for two weeks.

The mayor banned the sport on the grounds that public money should not be spent on a controversial sport. There is debate among Colombians on whether the sport is a cultural tradition or a form of animal cruelty.

The bullfighters argue the mayor’s decision to ban bullfighting has put 35,000 people out of work, and that Bogota is losing almost $1.6 million in revenue generated during the bullfighting season.

CCTV America’s Michelle Begue reports.
