Kerry addresses the US effort ‘Pivot to Asia’

World Today

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry laid out the U.S. vision for engagement in the Asia-Pacific region in Hawaii.

This is part of the U.S. effort to redefine its role in the region as China rises in global prominence, also known as the ‘Pivot to Asia.’

The four main areas of concern in Kerry’s speech were sustainable economic growth, clean energy, regional cooperation and “empowering people.” Another focus of the speech was China’s maritime disputes.

Kerry said the U.S. takes no position in such issues, but that the disputes should not come down to a bigger country like China having more influence simply because of its size or through military engagement.

Kerry also addressed cooperation between the U.S. and China on climate change, Iran and the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea.

CCTV America’s Jim Spellman reports.
